Taylah and Lachlan got married on Taylah's family property in Julatten, up on the tablelands behind Mossman — guests camping overnight, campervans parked in the paddock, a bus laid on for anyone who couldn't rough it. This one meant something extra to me too: Taylah is the older sister of Max, who I went to school with back in Weipa.

Taylah, a registered nurse, and Lachlan, a diesel fitter, both grew up in Far North Queensland — Taylah in Weipa, Lachlan between Gove in the Northern Territory and Cairns — before eventually meeting through mutual friends in Cairns. These days home is Karratha in WA, but FNQ clearly hasn't left them: fishing, camping, and their golden retriever Stella remain the constants, wherever they're living.

Lachlan's proposal came on a trip to Positano, on Italy's Amalfi Coast, travelling with their friend Stevie. Taylah found it a little odd — even rude — when Lachlan asked Stevie not to join them for dinner that night. She had no idea Stevie was in on the whole thing, quietly filming from a distance while Lachlan proposed.

For the wedding itself, Taylah and Lachlan were clear about what they didn't want: a big performance, hours lost to photos, or a day that felt more like a show than a party. Guests camped under the stars, food came from a wood-fired pizza stall rather than a formal sit-down, and the couple prioritised actually being present with the people who'd travelled to see them — some of them from as far as WA, and many from Weipa and North Queensland. Lachlan, in particular, wanted nothing posed or "trying to look cool" — just natural, low-key photos of two people who'd rather be mingling with friends than standing still for a camera.
