Some sessions happen because there's a wedding on the way. This one happened because Lauren and Chris had been together more than five years and realised they didn't have a single proper photo of the two of them together — no engagement, no wedding, just years of being a couple with nothing to show for it. So we fixed that, out in the long grass at the Glass House Mountains, with one of those peaks catching the last of the golden light behind them.

Like plenty of couples I photograph, Lauren and Chris told me upfront they weren't used to being in front of a camera — this was genuinely their first time doing anything like it. It didn't stay awkward for long. Once we sat down in the grass and let them just be with each other rather than posing for anything, the two of them spent most of the session laughing more than looking at me.

It's one of my favourite reminders that a session like this isn't really about the photos being perfect — it's about finally having something, after years of being the couple everyone else has photos of but you.
